Behind The Inspiration

Hi, I’m Kelley, the founder of Tikkun Lights.  I grew up in a Christian home where the holidays were magical.  Some of my favorite childhood memories were the anticipation for the Christmas Season: bringing the Christmas tree inside, unpacking its ornaments and decorations, placing gifts beneath its branches, and then watching the lights turn on to transform our house into a celebration.

In 2009, before getting married, I converted to Judaism and fell in love with the beauty of Jewish traditions and holidays.  But as our children got older, during the holiday season, I wanted them to feel that same sense of wonder and anticipation for Hanukkah, that I had felt for Christmas.  The menorah is such a powerful symbol of Hanukkah, and over the years, I began to imagine a way to weave my childhood traditions together with the rituals of our family’s Jewish faith.

That’s how the Menorah Tree was created.  It envisions the menorah to be more than just a small artistic piece.  It honors the importance of the menorah, while empowering it to become a home’s centerpiece, one that invites families to gather, to reflect, to celebrate and to create lasting memories.

My hope is to share our own family’s Hanukkah experience with others.  Every year, my kids decorate the tree, reminisce about each ornament, and dream about the gifts put underneath. Then, as we light the candles on the tree, we root ourselves again in connection, gratitude and faith, traditions that we can return to year after year, and one that our children can carry forward……and then we get Chinese food and go to a movie.
